The Founder's Story Behind WritingWorkshops.com

I sat down with Ben Tanzer for the new episode of his podcast, This Podcast Will Change Your Life, and we got into the parts of my story I don't usually tell. How WritingWorkshops.com started in the basement of a Methodist church in Dallas. The two novels I keep in a drawer. The two books my father handed me, one about hope and one about courage, when I first told him I wanted to write.

Ben is a generous interviewer, and he asked the questions that took me somewhere honest. We talked about failing in public, showing up for the unglamorous work, and why community has mattered more to my writing life than any single success.

Michael Bourne interviewed me about Writing Workshops Dallas for his piece in the September 2019 (MFA) issue of Poets & Writers Magazine. As Founder & Executive Director of WWD, it has been a joy to have so many talented writers find a home teaching at Writing Workshops Dallas AND to have so many wonderful emerging writers trust us with their work. Featured in D Magazine as an Artist to Learn From in 2018!

As the Founder & Director of Writing Workshops Dallas, I'm honored to be featured in D Magazine's article on artists to learn from in 2018! Thank you to Lyndsay Knecht for featuring me! About me

I'm the Founder & Executive Director of WritingWorkshops.com, an independent, artist-run creative writing school I established in 2016. Home to over 30K writers and counting, we serve as the official education partner of Electric Literature, offering online workshops, destination retreats in Paris, Dublin, Tuscany, Hawaii, and other locations, plus IndieMFA programs as alternatives to traditional MFA education. My collection of short tales, Families Among Us (Black Lawrence Press), received advanced praise from Roxane Gay, Ramona Ausubel, and Matt Bell. My work has been adapted for broadcast on NPR and published by Tin House, McSweeney's, Short Fiction, Longform, VICE, and over 70 other literary journals. A movie adaptation of my short story "A Family Among Us," originally published by Roxane Gay, is currently in development. I co-wrote, with Kyle Minor, a dramatic WWII movie about the wartime actions of Polish underground hero Jan Karski, set for production in 2026. I'm a graduate of the MFA Program at UC Irvine, though I often credit my community college creative writing classes as some of my most valuable educational experiences—a perspective that shaped my vision for WritingWorkshops.com as filling gaps left by disappearing community college continuing education programs. I received a generous Emerging Writer Grant from the Elizabeth George Foundation and have been awarded fellowships from The Community of Writers and the Vermont Studio Center, as well as a generous grant from Americans for the Arts Foundation. I've taught in the Creative Writing Programs at SMU, UT-Dallas, and UC-Irvine, and I moderated August 2025's Big Conversation for The Writer's Chronicle to discuss the emerging alternatives to traditional creative writing education.
