The book is forthcoming from <a href="https://www.tamupress.com/book/9780875658056/a-fire-to-light-our-tongues/" target="_blank">Texas Christian University Press</a> in May 2022. <p></p><p><i>A Fire to Light Our Tongues: Texas Writers on Spirituality </i>brings together the works of writers in Texas. The title is taken, with permission, from Naomi Shihab Nye’s introduction to <i>Salting the Ocean: 100 Poems by Young Poets, </i>where
she states the role of poetry serves as “a fire to light our tongues.”
This view describes the role that creative writers, encountering the
challenges of this past decade, face as they grapple with shifting views
of spirituality. While the project started before COVID-19, given the
current worldwide pandemic, a book of creative work responding to
writers’ spirituality could not be more timely. This anthology offers
readers creative works by Texas writers as they wrestle with evolving
systems of belief or nonbelief. </p>Blakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15533700101268706348noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8299849253085251364.post-21815309282921322072022-02-09T13:54:00.008-05:002022-02-09T13:54:56.350-05:00Semi-Finalist in the ISAConnect Action & Adventure Genre Busting Screenplay Competition! <p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg4meMipGFJtNrKwVJyCRDaJH3LYmlh4tG0rkDnPNc5jEZNrwaU_Aw3Ooi0729sxQrtxgMgnQAADIG3RcHQ1URGSLhVwLKFdfXErt4WD9RENx9TbpRUvL8I4epE9yqdn2Fku63M7gFfc3SAy-PdW3Xf14--4qUYSllmTOjDHgY0FX93xQAzZ09YS5gttw=s900" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="506" data-original-width="900" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg4meMipGFJtNrKwVJyCRDaJH3LYmlh4tG0rkDnPNc5jEZNrwaU_Aw3Ooi0729sxQrtxgMgnQAADIG3RcHQ1URGSLhVwLKFdfXErt4WD9RENx9TbpRUvL8I4epE9yqdn2Fku63M7gFfc3SAy-PdW3Xf14--4qUYSllmTOjDHgY0FX93xQAzZ09YS5gttw=s320" width="320" /></a></div>My screenplay, NORTHBOUND, is a Semi-Finalist in the ISAConnect <a href="https://www.networkisa.org/modules/contest/individual/isa_action_announcements/1786" target="_blank">Action & Adventure Genre Busting Screenplay Competition</a>! I'm honored to have <a href="https://www.dmagazine.com/publications/d-magazine/2020/july/your-2020-summer-reading-list-blake-kimzeys-sonic-bloom/" target="_blank">a new short story called "Sonic Bloom"</a> published in the annual fiction issue of <i>D Magazine</i>
(July 2020)! Each story in this issue was inspired by a song about Dallas or from a Dallas-based band. I chose the 1998 song "Sonic Bloom" by Tripping Daisy.<br />
<br />
Thank you to editor Zac Crain for including my work along
with so many great Dallas-based writers: Ben Fountain, Kimberly King Parsons, Kathleen Kent, LaToya Watkins, Joe Milazzo, Harry Hunsicker,
Will Clarke, Julia
Heaberlin, Samantha Mabry, & Sanderia Faye. <br />
<br />
AND: as the Executive Director of <a href="https://writingworkshopsdallas.com/" target="_blank">Writing Workshops Dallas</a>,
I'm also thrilled there are short stories from 4 WWD instructors in
this issue! Grab a copy on newsstands now <a href="https://www.dmagazine.com/publications/d-magazine/2020/july/your-2020-summer-reading-list-blake-kimzeys-sonic-bloom/" target="_blank">or read the story HERE</a>. Thanks, as always, for reading!

I founded <a href="https://writingworkshops.com/" target="_blank">Writing Workshops Dallas</a> three years ago with the simple hope that one workshop would make. In the time since, we've had over 1700 students take our classes. After finding a foothold in Dallas, we've launched a <a href="https://writingworkshopsparis.com/" target="_blank">summer workshop in Paris, France</a> with <i>Carve Magazine</i>, in-person classes in <a href="https://writingworkshops.com/collections/detroit" target="_blank">Detroit</a>, a full suite of <a href="https://writingworkshops.com/collections/online-class" target="_blank">online classes</a>, and much more. I'm so excited to launch <a href="https://writingworkshops.com/pages/the-big-texas-read" target="_blank"><b>The Big Texas Read </b></a>with Gemini Ink in San Antonio, a statewide book club founded in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to offer those staying at home a way to connect by reading. I have a short essay in <i>The</i> <i>Dallas Morning News</i> Arts Section today on
how Dallas writers are embracing their newfound solitude. Fellow contributors include David Searcy, Sarah Hepola, James Donovan, Brantley Hargrove, Joe Milazzo, Greg Brownderville, and Alex Temblador. Thank you to Dan Singer and the Arts Staff for inviting me to contribute to their coverage of how artists and writers are adapting to the pandemic. You can read all of the essays <a href="https://www.dallasnews.com/arts-entertainment/books/2020/04/05/arts-and-the-city-dallas-writers-are-embracing-their-newfound-solitude-and-singing-to-their-cats/" target="_blank"><b>HERE</b></a>. I have a new personal essay published by <a href="http://www.hobartpulp.com/web_features/a-roadside-stash" target="_blank"><i>Hobart</i></a> today. I've started the terrifying exercise of writing more nonfiction. As in my fiction, my brothers are my muse here. This piece is mostly about being a late 80s little shit and just being with them. Thanks so much for reading, which you can do so <a href="http://www.hobartpulp.com/web_features/a-roadside-stash" target="_blank">HERE</a>.Blakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15533700101268706348noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8299849253085251364.post-35693876244001881002020-01-02T19:43:00.002-05:002020-01-03T12:34:40.371-05:00The Decade in Dallas Culture | Dallas Morning News & WWD<div class="" data-pm-slice="0 0 []" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">
